Quarter 4
This quarter I have learned a lot about writing and how to organize what I write in a much more orderly fashion. The biggest things I have learned about writing in this class have also helped me in writing music. It almost seems like writing and music go hand in hand. Many of the techniques that I have learned in here have taught me a lot about how to write successful and interesting music. These things are structure, vocabulary and feeling.
The structure I think is incredibly important because the way that you write a great and understandable piece is by ordering everything in a way that makes sense. This concept is the same with music, when you structure music in a way that makes sense people tend to enjoy it more because most people don’t enjoy foreign music and when your native people can’t understand the music how can they enjoy it? Layering music and structuring it in a way that makes sense means success, when you listen to a song with good structure it sounds a lot better than a song that is all over the place. Layering is another very important part of songs because people like to hear subtle changes being added and removed from the music. If parts change abruptly in the music it should be used sparingly because it is almost like changing the song on the receiver and people might not be in the mood for the song that it has turned into if it varies too much throughout the song. Special effects and silence also plays a big part in the song structure because when you layer bass drops and special effects over parts of the song it really adds emphasis to the parts. When there is an emphasis on a part it makes people remember the part and when they remember it, that makes them want to hear the song again. Music is very psychological and not very many people understand how it manipulates them because they don’t think about it. If anyone really evaluated how music really affects the world it could be considered brainwash. The world is a very misunderstood place and music is very misunderstood to the effect that it has on the listeners and how it is engineered to the crowd.
Vocabulary also plays a huge part in music because the more you know about the theory, the more you can create in different ways and engineer to the crowd that is listening to it. Not a whole lot of people understand what vocabulary does for papers or music. It seems like a small part, but the more unusual words and things you write, the more people will want to hear more because they have never heard something like that. Knowing what notes to use where and how to write each part in relation to the notes sets the mood of the music and this is more than just hearing. When people listen to music they can feel the notes more than just hear them. When people go to a show they go for the feeling not to just listen. If people just wanted to listen they wouldn’t go to the show. When people just listen they really only hear the notes and they don’t feel them as much. At a show people can also feel the notes a lot better and the bass is what really emphasizes this. Something about the bas really enforces the mood of the music and makes it more powerful compared to what most people understand. What you feel when you listen to music is a huge part of how to feel about the music because the bass almost controls your mood.
Feeling and emotion in music and in writing is key to writing something that is understandable while being powerful. When the listener can feel what the artist felt when they wrote the piece, it plays a huge part in how they will be feeling for the rest of the night. Most people underrate how the feeling of the music makes them feel. They get wrapped up in trying to hear the lyrics and have some to follow a long with, but the real deal that is affecting them is actually what the instruments is doing. The vocals are only there to really help the listener understand the instruments kind of like a guide. The vocals are there to give the listener something native to follow along with and this makes the listener feel a lot more comfortable when they listen. Comfort is a huge part of playing a successful show, if the crowd isn’t comfortable than the entertainer is not doing their job. When the crowd feels comfortable the music has so much more affect on how everyone will feel afterward. It is very important to have a great first impression in a show because that is something that everyone will remember afterward.
Overall I think music and writing just have so much in common and all of the little things I have learned about English writing has taught me a lot about how to write music and how to appeal to any crowd that I want. This is very important to write music that will appeal to the crowd that you want to pull in. Most people won’t understand this concept and it has taken me years to realize it, but music really is like brainwash. The artists can write their music to make people feel how they want and attract the kind of crowd that they want. This is a big plus for anyone that feels like they want more than just music because it is almost like persuasion. For some reason the stage makes people look way better than they really are, its like watching something of a higher status because they are somewhere that you feel like you cannot get to.
